Download the Gutenprint 5.1.3 drivers for OS X and install on your Mac running OSX. Using the Printer Setup Utility in OS X, select the 'Plus sign' to add a printer. Click on the IP Printer Icon to bring up the IP settings. Select LPD for your protocol, enter the IP address of the print server from above, name your queue 'LP'. Under Name, enter the name of the printer, under location, provide a location (optional) and under Print Using, select Canon and you will then see all the print drivers that you installed back in step 3. Select the Canon Pixma MP830-CUPS+Gutenprint v5.1.3 driver or any other Printer Manufacture/Model that you need.
My config: mac mini 1.83GHz, 512 MB; Mac OS X 10.4.11 I had some troubles to get an HP Color Laser Jet 1600 to run, some advices led me to install 3 prg parts and 1 thiny prg onto the desktop (for download somthing to the printer) everytime after switching on.
Once you complete step 6, you should have a new printer added to your list of printers and you should be able to print. I've only tested this for my MP830 and I'm assuming that the process will work for other printers. If you try this and it works, let others know.

I was able to get my Imac and 2 windows machine to work using this method, I am connected to a HP Laserjet 1012. The only thing I had to add was to enable Apple Talk with in my ethernet connection setup.
Many thanks, the PSUS4 was on its way back to the store. This worked fantastically for me as well. I had it working from my macbook previously running OS 10.4, but it stopped working with my upgrade to 10.5. Could be that the 10.5.1 patch fixed it, regardless Following these instructions, I'm now printing wirelessly over the network from Leopard using the built in gutenprint driver from my macbook to my HP all in one 6110 which is connected to a linksys PSUS4 to my wired/wireless network. Thanks for posting the step by step. Clearly many folks are benefiting from you taking the time to type this up.
I'm going to echo the post over to the apple forums so that it's visible to more folks. Cheers, Ethan. OK so I have had to use a slightly different approach from that detailed above to get my HP PSC 1315 working with the PSUS4 printing from an intel iMac.
The following details copied from another forum. Here are the updated instructions with my changes.thanks again.I was no where without your help. Equipment: Airport extreme, MBP C2D, HP PSC 1315 Printer is connected via usb to airport extreme You will have to download and install the following.
Espgs-7.07.1.ppc.dmg 2. Foomatic-rip-3.43.2.15.ppc.dmg 3.
Hpijs-2.7.10-UB.dmg Install in the order listed above, they both must be installed for this to work. Than do the following: 1. Go to system preferences, print and fax 2. Click + to add a printer 3.
The hp psc 1310 will be listed with the connection type AppleTalk (although it might be named after your print server) 4. Highlight this printer. At the bottom of the window you will see the option for 'Select Driver' and than you can choose something from the drop down menu. Search for HP 7. This now propagates a window full of HP printers including the hpijs drivers that you installed above. Scroll down until you see HP PSC 1310 FOOTMATIC/hpijs and highlight this 9.
Click add. The next step is specific (i think) to the PSUS4.
Log on to the print server through a web browser (what ever your current favorite is), select the Protocol tab and then the AppleTalk option under this. You then have options of binary or ASCII. To get the PSC1315 working (or any PSC 1310 series printers) I had to select the ASCII option. You should then be able to print!
Hope this helps someone else. Message Edited by Graham Lovett on 06:13 AM. PSUS4 with Canon i860.
Shared with 2 Vista/1 XP/1 OSX 10.5 machines. This is the config on the OSX 10.5: -Gutenprint 5.2.0-rc1 installed -Appletalk on PSUS4 with ASCII -Appletalk on OSX 10.5 printer installation -'Canon i860 + Gutenprint' driver (name not exact) (I also installed the Canon driver from the Canon website, but not sure if that was needed since it worked fine before that on USB.) I do loose the ability to see ink status from all machines b/c of the print server. With the Airport Extreme (I borrowed to try) setup was flawless, and at least I can still get ink status from the Mac. (sucks that it's $170+ otherwise I'd just replace the linksys with this.) I'm still considering getting Airport Express (about same price as PSUS4), from what I see it can do the same thing as the Airport Extreme (bridge my wireless network, share printer, but 1 ethernet instead of 5 ports, but can be easily compensated with a cheap switch), plus with the wireless audio feature) Message Edited by labtroll on 11:10 PM Message Edited by labtroll on 11:20 PM. Here's another solution I pieced together from some of these posts and some others from other forums: I did this with a G3 iBook hooked to the print server to a Samsung ML-2510. Using the Bi-Admin tool for your print server, ensure that AppleTalk is selected as a protocol.
Ensure you select ASCII vs. Binary on the config page. Save the changes in the BI-Admin tool and exit. Ensure you have the Samsung Mac OS X driver installed from the Samsung website. Delete any existing printers from the printer list that are using the Samsung driver. Select Add printer.
If you've done the Bi-Admin tool right, you'll see the id for the print server show up as an AppleTalk device. If not, go into your network settings via system preferences and enable AppleTalk. Then go back to step 4.
If you see the print server show up as an AppleTalk device, then you're in business. Ensure you select the ML-2510 series in the Printer model selection box. Save changes and try printing.
(formerly called Gimp-Print) is an open-source package of improved printer drivers and utilities that can be installed on Mac OS X to enhance printing functionality and add additional support for older printers. It has driver support for over 1300 printer models, and adds a plugin for better print customization and color adjustments. Since I do a lot of Mac system imaging and deployment, I don't like to install a bunch of separate print drivers on a seed image.
I initially just used Leopard's built-in generic Postscript or PCL driver, but I had many issues with printing speed (the speed of spooling and job submission, not the speed of the physical printing process) and print quality. So I installed the Gutenprint package, switched all printers to the Generic Gutenprint PCL driver, and the printing issues subsided. To use Gutenprint, simply download the.dmg (5.2.3 is the latest version) and install the package. All of the necessary PPD's and drivers will be copied to your computer, and you will be able to select Gutenprint drivers when adding printers. If you have an Epson Stylus Inkjet printer, you will then also be able to use 'escputil' from Terminal to do printer maintenance like head aligning and cleaning.
Update: Thanks to Charley and Olligarski for commenting that Gutenprint drivers are now included in Leopard. I have used Gutenprint for a while but failed to check if it was installed before I started using the package. It's still worth the install if you're a Tiger user, but the latest version requires at least 10.3 Panther.
